Dubbo & District Family History Society was formed in 1983 as the Macquarie Family History Foundation with the aim of providing resources and information to promote family history research.
After several changes of location during the next number of years, the Society is now successfully situated in the Community Arts Building of the Western Plains Cultural Centre on the corner of Wingewarra and Gipps Streets, Dubbo.
The Society’s library resources have now grown to include an impressive and comprehensive collection of records for local research as well as Australia-wide and overseas.
Our resources include all major subscription databases (Ancestry, Find My Past, World Vital Records, Internet History Resources and more), plus a comprehensive collection of CD’s, microfilm, microfiche and books.
Our large book collection covers cemeteries, local and school histories (many of them from the Western region), family histories, general research guides and local, Australian and overseas research.
Our records specific to Dubbo include; existing Admission Records for Dubbo Public School, Shakespeare Burial Records, Dubbo Cemetery Records and Monumental Headstone Photographs, Indexes and Records of Holy Trinity Baptisms and Marriages, Talbragar Shire Rate Books, Pioneer and Settlers Registers, plus many published histories of the area.
Current projects being conducted by our Society include:
- Indexing of local newspapers from 1990s
- Indexing of Manchester Unity Minute and Membership books
- Scanning of Vincent Studio Negative Collection
- A valuable and ever-expanding card index to people and places in the Dubbo area.
Our resources are backed by our volunteer research assistants who, between them, possess a wealth of local history knowledge and wide ranging skills and experience in family history research.
