Dubbo & District Family History Society Inc. will be conducting a series of training and education sessions throughout 2019 which will be open to members and the public.
Every session will cost $5 for members and $10 for non-members with each course running from 11am-12noon.
The first session will be held on Monday 25th February in the family history rooms. The topic will be ‘Tips,tricks and pitfalls in using online family history databases’ – a look at Ancestry, Findmypast, Australian Biographical Database, British Newspapers, Trove, NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages, and more……..

Changed parking in front of Family History rooms. We have been advised that the Leadership Academy is using a room in the same building as Family History. Please note there will now be a bus zone in force for one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon. Also one of the disabled parking spots has been removed.

There are many benefits to membership which vary from society to society. However you can generally expect talks on history, a regular newsletter, access to the society’s library publications with both hard copy and on line available. The biggest benefit is meeting the other members who can share information and findings with you.
You might take the opportunity to become involved in a society project which always provides benefits and information to you. With a new year just started why not think about joining your local family history society. Our society has a comprehensive collection of local resources, as well as an extensive collection of records relating to the rest of Australia and overseas. Some of the records specific to Dubbo include Admission records for Dubbo Public School, Shakespeare Burial Records, and Dubbo cemetery records which includes headstone photographs. In addition we hold Indexes and Records of Holy Trinity Baptisms and Marriages, plus Shire Rates Books and Pioneer and Settlers Registers. You will also find on our shelves many published histories of families in the western area. These are just a snippet of what we have in our rooms, so if you are thinking of researching your family history, why not come in and see what is available. Church of England records from Holy Trinity Church Dubbo At our library rooms we hold photo copies of baptisms, and marriages conducted by the clergy of the Holy Trinity parish.
These copies are of the original Baptismal registers and are for the years 1874- 1968. Details that can be found on entries include, date of baptism, date of birth, child’s christian name/s, parents’ names, abode, occupation of father and by whom the ceremony was performed. The first baptism in the register is for Agnes, child of John and Agnes Angus who lived at Marthaguy at the time their baby was baptised on 24 May 1874. Agnes was born on 17 February 1873. Her father was a labourer.
Marriage register records are from 8 November 1884 to 29 December 1886, then from 8 August 1900 to 6 August 1978. These records are photo copies of the actual parish registers, containing all the information that you will find on the certified copy from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Details include date of marriage, full names of bride and groom, age at time of marriage, their address, occupation and details of parents of the bride and groom. Birthplace of the bride and groom and their conjugal status at the time of the marriage, all this important information also contains the signatures of the bride and groom, priest conducting the ceremony along with the witnesses, who are often family members.
The first marriage record to appear in the register on 8 November 1884 was between Walter Thomas Ross and Christina Eason. Walter Ross had been born in Yorkshire and Christina Eason had been born in Norfolk, England.

The Birth, Death and Marriage registry has not increased its fees for certificates obtained from them. If applying for a certificate for family history research, without the registration number provided, will cost $45 or $70 if priority, while if you have the registration number the cost will be $32 or $57 priority. Family history research certificates are only available on births prior to one hundred years ago, that is prior to 1917, deaths prior to thirty years ago, that is prior to 1987 and marriages prior to fifty years ago, that is prior to 1967. For certificates required after these dates there is a fee of $53 for any certificate. More information can be found on the registries website. If you need to purchase certificates to obtain more information, or to verify your research, why not consider using one of the transcription services.
