Book Launch, Friday 15th November 2024

Dubbo & District Family History Society Inc will launch our new book, a revised edition of Early Pioneers of Dubbo Pre-1882 in November, close to Dubbo Day, the 175th anniversary of Dubbo’s gazettal as a village. 
This is a very important addition to the early history of Dubbo. With new resources available we have been able to edit and add to our previous edition. It has been completely reset and includes new photographs and some new biographies. Huge effort has been made by the book committee to make it a fabulous edition!
You are invited to the launch, which will be held in the Auditorium at the Western Plains Cultural Centre on Friday 15 November 2024 at 2.00pm. We would be delighted if you could join us for this special event.  We hope that some descendants of the original pioneers in the book will also be able to attend. Just a few of the names mentioned in this updated publication are Brocklehurst, Carr, Furney, Gillis, Rorke, Samuels, Serisier and Tink.

Share Your Story – Friday 20th September

Our  Share Your Story on Friday 20th September will be held in the Auditorium (near the museum entrance) in the Cultural Centre.  Our guest for this occasion will be Rachael Melhuish from Wellington  who will share with us her research relating to “the impact of music on the mental health and well being of WW1 soldiers”.  You may remember how Bert McLellan told us at our last Share Your Story how soldiers in Vietnam enjoyed music.  As usual it will commence at 2pm followed by afternoon tea and a chance to speak to Rachael.  The cost is $8, and you must RSVP by Wednesday 18th to baretsmith@bigpond.com

 

 

Information Session – Friday 21st June 2024

We all meet ‘brick walls’ in our family history research, and find it frustrating not being able to make any progress.  How can we break through them?
The society will conduct an information sessions about this very topic on Friday 21st June 2024, from 10.30am-11.30am in the Music Room next to our rooms.
We will look at reasons why our research can come to a halt and some possible ways to move forward. We will also have some time to chat about your own brick wall and between all of us, we’ll search for a solution.
As there is a limit of 20 people you will need to book in with Jo Murphy by text on 0438 511 980 by Tuesday 18th June.  The course will cost $7.50 for  members and $15.00 for non members.

 

 

 

 

Share Your Story – Friday 17th May 2024

Share Your Story for May will be presented by Cathy Thompson with the theme “From Little Things, Big Things Grow”.  The name came about after Cathy originally planned to write her father’s story, but it grew to include much more research and went back to the first generation of the Mcintyre family to live in Australia.
Please note the event will be held in the Cultural Centre Auditorium, on Friday 17th May commencing at 2pm.  There is a cost of $8 which includes afternoon tea.  If you plan to attend please reply by email to Lyn at baretsmith@bigpond.com by Wednesday15th May 2024.

 

 

 

Information Session – 19th April 2024

Continuing our training theme for 2024 we have to announce an information session for interested parties called “Tips, Tricks and Pitfalls when using online family history databases“.  The information session will show you more effective and productive ways to get the best results when you’re searching family history databases such as FamilySearch, Trove, British Newspaper Archive, Ancestry, FindMyPast and more.  It will be held on Friday 19th April from 10.30-11.30am in the music room at the Cultural Centre Precinct. Starting Your Family History Research

DDFHS is offering a four week course to help people who are beginning their family history search, or who have started and are not sure what to do next.  Following are just some of the points to be covered:
How to organise information you already have.
Where to find new information.
Using birth, death and marriage certificates.
How to use online databases, both free and subscription.
Finding ancestors in immigration records.
The course will be conducted on each
Wednesday in March, that is the
   6th, 13th, 20th and 27th of March.
They will run from 10.30am-12.30pm in the Music room at the Community Arts Centre.  Cost will be $7.50 per session for members , $15 per session for non-members.
